things said to a pregnant woman: a series
“Well I guess that means you’re gonna get half an epidural.”
—my big brother Brandon, wisecracking (as usual) on my plan to use disposable diapers (gasp!) for the first couple of weeks with Bables. He’s also talented enough to make one wisecrack into two—cracking on our plan for a natural childbirth in the process.
Oh, brother.
Countdown to Bables: his woodland lair...
What’s behind this door?
A nursery!
What was once Bables’ Grandpa’s room, and then his great-grandpa’s office is now his nursery!
Here’s our interpretation of a woodland baby room…I love all of the details.
Especially because everywhere I look in this room, I see something either handmade by someone special to me, or something from my childhood. ...

I really like these personalized necklaces I’ve found on Etsy recently. Sure would be awesome to have one with Bables, Mr. Ables, and my initials on it.

Since Bables and I will (most likely) have the same birth month, we’d share a stone…so we’d use a green peridot and a blue topaz…so pretty!
I also love these versions:

Countdown to Bables: facial hair edition
About two or three months ago, I said something to Mr. Ables like: “wouldn’t it be kind of awesome if you had a giant beard in the delivery room?”
I don’t know why I said it, but at that moment, the beard began to grow. And if you know Mr. Ables, you KNOW that he can grow a bristly, bushy, red, unmistakable beard…in about two days.
He decided it would be his baby...

“I mean, you’re looking at having a, well, pretty…substantial sized baby here.”
—my doctor, informing me of Bables’ confirmed whopper status. At birth (soon? please?), he’s projected to be eight to nine pounds.
I think I might have to name him Otis.
Big Otis Ables.
beginnings
On our way to the Ables’ lake house yesterday afternoon, Mr. Ables said, “only two more weeks of summer…” which is an always depressing phrase. Summer’s end is school’s beginning, and it always comes too soon. Back-to-school sales begin right after July 4th, and the sight of notebook paper and highlighters is grim reality.
But in two weeks, I won’t be...
things said (about) a pregnant woman's baby
my niece (she’s five) to my sister-in law as they are leaving our house (their first visit) today: Momma, God’s not finished with that baby yet.
sister in law: You’re right. What part do you think He’s still working on?
niece: Whether or not the baby is a boy or a girl. (poor girl is surrounded by boy cousins)
….pause for more thinking….
niece: Momma, how...

“Are you sure we can sit in a booth?
…can I be on your blog now because I just said that?”
—My sister-in-law Meghan as she watched me struggle to wedge myself into a booth last week at dinner.
putting down roots
There are so so so many things to love about our new home.
One thing Mr. Ables and I were most excited about was having a YARD. OF OUR VERY OWN. TO PLANT THINGS. IN THE GROUND. OF OUR YARD.
City-dweller that I’ve been, I started with bables steps, planting some hanging baskets and a large pot of petunias for the front steps.
But then Uncle Bennie, Mr. Ables’ uncle called us...
craving an old friend
Oh, to be “back home”… it means many things.
Close by family, close to those beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains…
and close to the Sno Hut.
In the summertime, seeing that happy Eskimo face is pretty close to a religious experience. Forget the fact that this “hut” is in the middle of a strip mall parking lot in front of an Asian grocery store and a Dollar...

34 and 35 weeks
Sullivan’s Island. Our very last night in Charleston.
On our way to the Ables’ lake house. One week post-move. Still feeling unsettled. I had to climb a cattle fence to get up to this chimney…only to discover that it, too is encased in cattle fencing.
I’m now 36 weeks along…that’s right. Four (or less?!?) weeks until Bables is HERE.
getting me through the day(s)
Oh, hello there.
I’m still around. Just getting settled. And taking naps. And fighting the urge to drink 3 slushies a day. Or eat 4 shaved ices. Or….
It’s gonna hit 110 degrees here today, so I’m staying inside and getting all of Bables’ clothes washed and put away. I can’t wait to show you his nursery…because he has one now. And it looks so great...

it's all happening
So. We moved.
A simple verb, right? Three weeks (maybe four? time is out of my grasp these days) after making the decision to move back to our hometown, I see yet again that those simple words are the ones most full.
“Moved” unfolds into verb upon verb; meaning: packing, goodbye-ing, cleaning, driving, worrying, sweating, crying, hoping, greeting, welcoming, unloading,...

First ever video blog. Sadly not my first ever time being that awkward.
